David Edgar drops 'Inevitable' verdict on Rangers ace after decision he made this summer

Heart and Hand believe that it was “inevitable” that James Tavernier would be forced out of the Rangers starting XI if he “didn’t perform well” this season.

The defender was consistently linked with an Ibrox exit over the summer but nothing ever came to fruition and the captain remained at Ibrox.

While replying to a fan from the Heart and Hand X account (17 November), David Edgar shared his thoughts on the decision Tavernier made to stay at Ibrox in the summer.

“He [Tavernier] didn’t want to leave in summer and unfortunately it was inevitable if he stayed and didn’t perform well what would happen,” he wrote.

James Tavernier should have left Rangers in the summer

Since the start of the 2024/25 season, Tavernier is the player who has seemed to be the most scrutinised from Philippe Clement’s squad.

While his set-piece taking is still up there with the best in the league, everything else about his game seems way off the pace.

This was mainly shown in the first Old Firm derby of the season when the Gers lost 3-0 to Celtic and the Englishman was run ragged by Brendan Rodgers’ attack.

Since then, Clement has tried other alternatives to his captain and Dujon Sterling has been given the opportunity to stake his claim to be the Gers’ starting right-back.

If any clubs come in for Tavernier during the January window, it feels like the best option for both parties would be to cut ties.

Right now, whenever Tavernier falls short of the sort of expectations fans and pundits have there is always going to be external noise. He’s been a great servant but his race at Ibrox is run.

In other Rangers news, Tom English has shared his verdict on where the imminent future of Philippe Clement lies.
