Liverpool swatted Manchester United aside this weekend and the old question of who might make it into each others’ team has cropped up again.
United were second best throughout the game and were simply put to the sword by a clinical Liverpool side.
Indeed, it could have been more had Dominik Szoboszlai angered the likes of Jamie Carragher by passing up an easy chance by trying to showboat.
Of course, for United’s players in front of their home crowd, there was a sense of embarrassment at just how far behind their bitterest rivals they appear to have dropped.
And when speaking about the two XI’s, former Premier League manager Alan Pardew has admitted there’s only one United player who gets in Liverpool’s XI…and he’s not even played yet.
Alan Pardew claims Manuel Ugarte the only player from Man United good enough for Liverpool
Speaking on TalkSPORT about any United player who might get into the Liverpool XI, Pardew admitted there’s only one who has a chance, and he hasn’t even played a game yet.
And that man, is new signing Manuel Ugarte.
“Not really, if I am honest. No. I can’t think of any. Well, the boy who has just arrived, I actually really like him, Uruguayan, Ugarte. Sort of stuck in the middle of that Liverpool team,” Pardew said.
“Yeah, he could definitely, I think he could get in there.”
Even Ugarte is a bold call
While it’s hard to judge because we are yet to see Manuel Ugarte in the Premier League, this is still a bold shout from Pardew.
The fact is if Liverpool really wanted Ugarte then they’d have tried to get him with a bit more urgency.
Yes, Liverpool were thought to have been among the teams keen on Ugarte.
But in the end, the deal only went through close to the deadline so that says a lot about much the Reds really wanted him.
United fans, obviously, will hope Ugarte does prove good enough to be in a combined XI. If he doesn’t, then it just proves once more how far off it they are.
