Derek Ferguson appeared to backtrack on his opinion about Cyriel Dessers during the Dynamo Kyiv versus Rangers Champions League qualifier.
Speaking live on BBC Sportsound [6 August, 8:20pm] prior to Dessers’ late equaliser in the 1-1 draw, Ferguson slated the attacker for his poor performance in front of goal, accusing him of “sleeping”.
However, after the full-time whistle was blown, the former Rangers man seemed to take back his comments and labelled the Nigeria international as “marmite”.
“The first three or four months, Dessers was woeful. He was running offside, he didn’t look fit,” he said [BBC Sportscene, 6 August, 9:16pm]
“But what you can’t question is his character. He’s like marmite – you either love or hate him. Sometimes, you can’t get it out your mind how poor he was at the start.
“He deserved his goal tonight, with his work rate and desire. Centre-forwards need that belief in themselves. Dessers has taken that criticism on the chin and he keeps coming back for more.”
Cyriel Dessers was lucky during Dynamo Kyiv v Rangers
Of all the players currently plying their trade for Philippe Clement’s team, Dessers is one of the men who has been consistently linked with an Ibrox exit before the 30 August deadline [Daily Record, 24 July].
While the striker has come out and said that he’s now happy to stay with the club [Andy Newport, 29 July], there are still rumours floating around regarding the 29-year-old’s future.
He was the Gers’ top scorer last term but was quite frustrating when it came to converting chances.
This was shown again during their Champions League qualifier against Dynamo on 6 August.
The number nine had the best chances of the game and despite having multiple shots on target, he only managed to bag one goal for his troubles.
While some might not complain as long as he’s scoring, the fact that the Gers could have put the game to bed on multiple occasions makes for a frustrating viewing for fans.
If he hadn’t managed to put the ball into the back of the net in the dying embers of the game, there’s no doubt that he would have been slated for not performing to the standards expected of him.
In other Rangers news, Ferguson shared his verdict on Rangers new boy Jefte after his debut for the club.
