Aberdeen could beat Rangers to best-in-class PL talent - report

Aberdeen are in competition with Rangers over a move to land Chelsea youngster Leo Castledine, according to Football Scotland.

According to the outlet’s website on 7 August the Dons may be the likelier club to secure the teenager on a season-long loan deal as they are not looking to include an option to buy, which is what the London giants are most open to.

Interest has been registered from Pittodrie and there is also competition from within the English Championship.

Rangers want to bring in the Stamford Bridge talent with a view to signing him permanently at the end of the deal, and an approach has already been made.

Castledine made his first-team debut for Chelsea in the 6-1 Carabao Cup victory over Middlesbrough last season and is highly-rated as a prospect.

So it is probably no surprise that they aren’t planning to lose him permanently before he has had an opportunity to build on that.

But with Conor Gallagher set to be the latest academy product to depart Stamford Bridge for pure profit to help balance out the huge spending in recent windows [BBC Sport, 5 August] it may be possible to convince the Premier League side to do a deal.

Castledine could be a factor in central midfield and as an attacking option, with Todd Cantwell having put in a transfer request amid interest from England [Scottish Sun, 22 July].

Todd Cantwell has asked to leave Rangers during the transfer window.

BBC Sport reported on 1 July that Chelsea were making their 18-year-old available for loan but weren’t ready to entertain permanent offers for a talent who is “arguably the best in his age group” at the club.

Whether the Gers would row back on their push to include a permanent option in order to see off competition from Aberdeen or elsewhere in England remains to be seen.

In other Rangers news, Chris Jack has shared a Cyriel Dessers transfer update after approaches were made to the Light Blues.
