'Dire' - Journalist issues verdict on January sale of Rangers player after display v St Mirren

Mark McDougall believes Rangers should be looking at which Turkish clubs would be willing to sign Ridvan Yilmaz in January.

The Herald Scotland journalist described the left-back as a “dire footballer” after he came off the bench against St Mirren on Boxing Day.

Gers ended up losing the game 2-1 which was played at Paisley and now find themselves 12 points behind Celtic.

McDougall wrote on X: “Should be going begging to any Turkish team willing to take Ridvan Yilmaz in January. A dire footballer.”

Yilmaz’s criticisms seem a bit harsh, especially considering his limited game time this season due to injury issues.

Coming off the bench against St Mirren with Gers already chasing the game is not an ideal situation to judge a player’s full capabilities, particularly for someone who hasn’t had the chance to build match fitness.

The Turkey international has been sidelined for much of the campaign, which naturally impacts his performance when he does play.

It’s essential to remember that he’s one of only two natural left-backs at the club, alongside Jefte, making his presence crucial for squad depth.

Selling him in January would not only reduce their options at left-back but also seems premature given he hasn’t had a fair opportunity to demonstrate his abilities with regular play.

With proper recovery and consistent minutes, the 23-year-old is likely to show significant improvement.
