Chris Jack believes that the situation is critical for Rangers as they suffered a 2-1 defeat against St Mirren on Boxing Day.

Gers travelled to Paisley but failed to come away from their trip with anything as they lost the game courtesy of a late winner by the hosts.

Philippe Clement’s half-time changes got his side back in the game, but they failed to score another goal and paid the price for it.

Jack wrote on 26 December in the Rangers Review: “The Rangers Review has previously reported that Clement will look to strengthen his defensive options during the January transfer window.

“That cannot come soon enough now given the shortage of bodies.

“No date has been set for John Souttar to return, while Neraysho Kasanwirjo is a long-term absentee after sustaining a serious knee injury.

“The situation is now critical.”

Rangers desperately need new signings in January

St Mirren’s victory was a stark indicator of Gers’ defensive frailties, showcasing a performance that was far below expectations.

Clement’s side not only failed to secure a point but also exposed significant gaps in their backline, particularly with the absence of key defenders like Souttar and the long-term injury to Kasanwirjo.

The late winner by St Mirren, after Rangers had equalised through Danilo, underscored the urgent need for defensive reinforcements.

Clement must address why his team couldn’t maintain their lead, especially after the tactical changes seemed to work.

However, the responsibility doesn’t solely rest with the manager as the club’s recruitment strategy in the upcoming January transfer window will be critical.
