Billy Dodds believes things are getting “close to toxic” within the Rangers fanbase due to the recent performances of Philippe Clement’s men.
The Gers are currently third in the Scottish Premiership and nine points adrift of Celtic and Aberdeen.
Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland in quotes relayed by BBC Sport (5 November), ex-Rangers striker Dodds shared his verdict on where the future of Clement lies.
“The board are probably doing the right thing in terms of giving them a bit of breathing space, but along with that has got to come results,” he said.
“You get the feeling if they go away to Olympiakos and they lose that game and anything goes wrong against Hearts, you get the feeling the board won’t give him that breathing space – just because of where the fans are.
“The fans are turning, it’s getting close to toxic, we’ll not be talking like this if Rangers keep getting results.
“But if something goes wrong, I think that atmosphere will come back and I would worry for Philippe Clement if that happens.”
Rangers must win Olympiacos in the Europa League
It’s no secret that the Gers have massively underperformed across all areas this season.
The fact that the Ibrox outfit sit third in the Scottish Premiership is nothing short of a travesty and it’s clear why fans are becoming increasingly annoyed.
There have been some good performances from Clement’s men this season such as their 2-0 win over Malmo or their 4-0 win over FCSB but these good times have been far too irregular.
The Gers were expected to mount a decent challenge for the title this term and instead, they’ve found themselves battling to keep third place.
The likes of Vaclav Cerny and Connor Barron have already hit the ground running and proven themselves as some of the best players within the Gers’ set-up so, with this in mind, there’s really no excuse for the other summer arrivals to not follow suit.
Realistically, anything less than a win for Clement’s against Olympiacos in the Europa League on 7 November could end up being the final nail in the coffin for the Belgian so Thursday’s tie is once again a must-win.
