Bryan King was surprised that Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke was called up to the England squad while James Maddison missed out.

The ex-Spurs scout feels as though neither Solanke nor Maddison was deserving of a place in the England squad.

As per BBC Sport (3 October), Lee Carsley has named the Tottenham striker in his England squad for UEFA Nations League fixtures with Greece (10 October) and Finland (13 October).

However, King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – feels that if Solanke was going to be called up, then Maddison also should have been.

“I can understand Maddison missing out,” King said.

“He needs to settle himself down and get back that form from last year otherwise I could see him drifting away from England call-ups.

“However, considering Solanke was picked, you could argue it was a little bit of a shock that Maddison wasn’t picked. Maddison’s contribution has been larger than what Solanke’s has this season. I was surprised that the striker was selected.

“If he was going to pick one, I thought he might pick the other, it is always good to have a club teammate in there. Maddison might have helped Solanke.

“Therefore, it is a bit strange that Solanke was picked but Maddison wasn’t.”

Solanke has scored three goals in his last three matches for Tottenham. However, overall it could be argued that Maddison has had the more impressive season thus far.

Therefore, seeing Solanke called up while the midfielder missed out might have surprised a few.

In some ways, Ange Postecoglou will likely be relieved that Maddison won’t now be at risk of injury over the next couple of weeks with England, especially with the “serious” concern the Australian already has.

However, playing for your country is a great boost to a player’s confidence. As a result, fans will no doubt hope to see both Solanke and Maddison in the England squad next time.

In other Tottenham news, the club have been mooted to recall one player from his loan spell amid a “frustrating” development.
