'Elephant in the Room' - DR journo shares 'Glaring' reason Rangers won't sack Clement

Rangers are reluctant to sack Philippe Clement due to the “elephant in the room” of the finances involved in paying him off, according to Robbie Copeland.

Copeland detailed in the Daily Record [13 November] how the £17million losses recently reported by the club came not long after handing Clement a new four-year contract, leaving the Belgian in a powerful position.

In addition to a payoff that would be the “most costly yet”, the less “glaring” reason is that the Gers had to trim their wage bill in the summer by around £5.5million per year, giving them even less leeway to pull the managerial trigger in a hurry.

Rangers cannot let themselves fall into the trap many other clubs have done with heavy financial commitments to regularly fire managers and keep up the payments.

The club are reportedly still paying both Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Michael Beale, and to hand Clement his marching orders would mean simultaneously paying four managers once his successor has arrived.

And there is no guarantee of success there, either. The disjointed Gers board are in full knowledge that all their hard work of cutting wage costs down could entirely unravel by sacking Clement, let alone rocking the boat of stability once again.

The 50-year-old and his representatives will be acutely aware of this fact, too, which could prove beneficial as he will be less likely to cower away from bigger decisions with his team which could backfire.

The Ibrox club’s season is at the point where any potential reward outweighs the risk involved – the league title is not happening; a respected European run and the domestic cups are still very much all to play for.

In other Rangers news, Alasdair Lamont would prefer a defensive change in Clement’s XI.
