Stephen McGowan has insisted that Rangers and Celtic take their fans for “absolute mugs” ahead of the new Scottish Premiership season getting underway.
The journalist hit out at John Bennett for his gamble over the construction delays at Ibrox, as fans paid out up to £600 for season tickets to start the campaign watching their side at Hampden Park instead.
Writing in his latest column for the Scottish Daily Mail [3 August, pg 103], McGowan hit out at the Old Firm despite their different approaches.
“When the plc board at Parkhead are risk averse, conservative and careful with their cash, their Rangers counterparts have a tendency to roll the dice on everything – from the short-term signings they make to the steel they buy from China,” he wrote.
“And yet, for all their differences, Glasgow’s big two share one thing in common.
“Year after year, they take their own supporters for absolute mugs.”
Rangers start new season in shambles
Philippe Clement may have signed a new contract at Ibrox this week, but that is about the only big positive to come from the club recently.
With another rebuild still yet to be complete, the side could look threadbare against Hearts at Tynecastle for the start of the season on 3 August.
Ibrox is out of order until September at the very earliest, with the possibility that it could even drag even further with crucial Champions League games now at Hampden too.
With players being sold frequently to bring in new faces, everything is up in the air and the only thing that will make that positive is a good start to the season.
There isn’t massive confidence behind that, but it would be a lifesaver for Bennett and his team.
Clement is focusing on the football, and the Belgian has been the calm behind the storm, something everyone will hope continues regardless of everything else.
In other Rangers news, Clement could still be sacked despite agreeing a new contract extension according to one journalist.
