Derek McInnes will not accept the Rangers job if Philippe Clement is sacked at Ibrox, says Derek Ferguson.
The Kilmarnock boss sparked the latest round of major questions regarding the Light Blues manager’s position with a 1-0 win at Rugby Park on 20 October, which was then compounded by the Gers’ 2-1 loss at Aberdeen 10 days later.
And the ex-Ibrox midfielder has been named as an obvious candidate to take over at Ibrox if a change is made by the likes of Kris Boyd [Scottish Sun, 31 October].
His record against Celtic has been held up as a prime reason why the Rangers hierarchy should appoint the Scot, with Brendan Rodgers tipped to be secretly delighted the move hasn’t been made before now, according to the Daily Record’s Keith Jackson on 10 November.
However, Ferguson doesn’t believe it would make any sense for McInnes, 53, to walk into the chaos in Govan at this stage, having previously come close to taking the job once before when manager of Aberdeen in 2019.
Rangers are without a chief executive or a permanent chairman, with John Gilligan in place temporarily after John Bennett’s resignation on health grounds, and model professional McInnes is tipped to look at that situation and conclude now is definitely not the right time to return to Ibrox.
Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes ruled out of Rangers picture
He exclusively told Ibrox News: “I’m not so sure about Derek. Derek’s had the opportunity before and had a look at it, didn’t think it was the right time.
“Would he look at the club now and think it’s the right time? Absolutely not, because the club’s in a mess.
“You look at the structure behind the scenes, it’s all over the place. So I wouldn’t see Derek McInnes taking that opportunity to go and take the reigns.
“We get that Derek has been a Rangers supporter, but the one thing about Derek McInnes, he’s very professional. He’s a clever guy, so he’s not going to take that.”
In other Rangers news, the situation could be set to get ugly after an incredible sack stance emerged from the top at Ibrox.
