Barry Ferguson can understand why Rangers and Celtic would be “desperate” to sign Lennon Miller but believes he will stay at Motherwell until the end of the season.

Miller, 18, has already made 55 senior appearances for Motherwell in the Scottish Premiership and domestic cups, and is a regular for the Scotland Under-21 side.

It was reported during the summer that Rangers have been scouting the talented teenager with a view to a transfer, so nothing materialised during the last window (Football Scotland).

Only last month, Ferguson initially talked up the impact midfielder Miller could have at Ibrox [Go Radio Football Show, 7 October] with Philippe Clement’s side flagging this season.

The ex-Gers skipper was back on Go Radio and, as quoted by the Scottish Sun [13 November], said he would walk into their current XI

“Personally, from the Rangers side of things, he walks straight into the team. He looks a very level-headed young man,” he said.

“I have seen him do a couple of interviews and he’s got a wee bit of arrogance but in a good way. He believes in his own ability and I think you have to have that if you want to play at the top level. He certainly has that in abundance.

“For me, I see the reason why Celtic and Rangers would be desperate to sign him. But I think just now, he stays at Motherwell until the end of the season.”

Rangers could look to snatch Lennon Miller

The only losers in a situation like Miller’s would be Motherwell, with Rangers still holding immense power as a force in the Scottish and European game despite the chaos they have been caught up in.

The Steelmen will fight tooth and nail to keep a player who despite his tender age has been one of Stuart Kettlewell’s most reliable performers.

Tam McManus [PLZ Soccer, 28 October] discussed a potential move for Miller last month and declared he will command a record fee for Motherwell, but completely ignored Rangers’ chances of signing him in favour of Celtic or an English switch.

Miller’s contract runs until the summer of 2026 at Fir Park, and clubs are on red alert for his signature with a debut for the senior Scotland side seemingly only a matter of time.

Clement and Nils Koppen welcomed a host of players to Ibrox over the summer, four of them aged 21 or under including Connor Barron, who was snatched from Aberdeen in a similar fashion.

In other Rangers news, Koppen could buy serious time with the fanbase if he secures a move for an on-fire EFL player.
