SunSport’s Robert Grieve thinks Rangers will opt to sack Philippe Clement if they don’t achieve results in this week’s fixtures.
Clement has been under heavy scrutiny due to what has been a dismal start to the campaign with his Rangers side already six points from the top, a margin that could increase given they play surprise package Aberdeen on Wednesday (30 October).
Calls have been made for the Belgian to be sacked already but Grieve thinks this week could decide his future at the club.
In an episode of the Coffee Club (30 October), Grieve said: “For me, he gets sacked if he loses both games (this week). I think it’s as brutal as that.
“We don’t want to see anyone lose their job by any stretch but there comes a point where enough’s enough.”
Aberdeen counter crucial for Rangers and Philippe Clement
Failure to win for the Gers could see the gap from the top open up to an alarming nine points. A tally which is almost unsalvageable with the form demonstrated by the Dons and Celtic,
Meanwhile, a win could reduce the gap to three points. The term ‘six-pointer’ gets thrown around a lot but this encounter truly fits that scenario.
It is very possible that the result could determine the future of the Belgian and the added pressure is something that Rangers cannot afford to let disturb them.
Even with a defeat, Clement could keep his job heading into Sunday’s (3rd November) semi-final against Motherwell in the Scottish League Cup, although if the Gers were to lose in that game, the Belgian’s position would surely become untenable.
Since the departure of Steven Gerrard in 2021, Rangers are yet to win a league title and Clement is looking increasingly unlikely to change their fortunes at Ibrox this season.
In other Rangers news, the club are still paying off the contracts of former managers Giovanni van Bronckhorst and Michael Beale, Scott McDermott has said.
