Enzo Fernandez sends message to Chelsea teammates after omission

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has taken to social media to show support for his teammates after their 3-1 Europa Conference League win over FC Astana on Thursday (December 12).

The 23-year-old was left in London as Enzo Maresca took an even more youthful side than usual on the 6000-mile journey to Kazakhstan.

Teenagers Sam Rak-Sakyi, Ato Ampah, Shumaira Mheuka, and Kiano Dyer all made their first-team debuts in the win over Astana, helping maintain Chelsea’s 100 per cent record in the competition.

Marc Guiu opened the scoring with a brilliant individual goal before bagging his brace just five minutes later.

Renato Viega scored Chelsea’s third to effectively kill off the game, with veteran winger Marin Tomasov scoring just before half-time to make it a little more respectable for the home side.

The win has Chelsea sitting pretty at the top of the new Europa Conference League league phase, having scored 21 and conceded just four goals in their five games.

The central midfielder is truly shining under Maresca, starting 14 of his 19 appearances across all competitions, scoring three goals, and providing seven assists in 1272 minutes of action.

Nine of those goal contributions have come in Chelsea’s six games, notably scoring their third in the 4-3 comeback win over rivals Tottenham on Sunday (December 8).

Fernandez has been made captain while Reece James remains on the sidelines due to another hamstring injury, with the World Cup winner taking to Instagram to show support for his teammates.

Maresca’s side have won six on the trot in all competitions as they prepare to host Brentford on Sunday (December 15).

Chelsea currently sit second in the Premier League, four points behind leaders Liverpool having played one more game after the Merseyside derby was postponed due to bad weather.
