Everton midfielder Amadou Onana won’t be making a late switch to Barcelona and will complete his move to Aston Villa on Monday (22 July), according to Mundo Deportivo.
The Spanish outlet reported in their print edition (22 July, page 7) that despite Barcelona sporting director Deco being keen on the Belgian, Onana is set to be announced as an Aston Villa player today.
Onana was reportedly Deco’s first choice as they look to strengthen their stocks in defensive midfield, but Mundo suggested Barca were priced out of a move by Villa and cannot meet the same price as they have other transfer priorities this summer.
Villa have agreed a £50million deal with Everton for Onana, who has reportedly passed a medical at Villa Park [Sacha Tavolieri, 21 July].
Amadou Onana move could give Everton huge transfer boost
While the Toffees are far from blessed in terms of central midfield options going into the new season, collecting a £50m fee for Onana could prove to be a watershed moment for their summer business.
Other players of such value are few and far between at Goodison Park, and with the Blues dead-set on keeping defender Jarrad Branthwaite [David Ornstein, 20 July], Onana always looked likely to be the player who would exit.
Barcelona being priced out of a transfer for the Belgian by Aston Villa lays the Premier League’s financial might bare, but any Toffees fan will tell you that’s not quite the case across the entire division.
However, adding £50m to their transfer coffers will not only allow the Goodison Park hierarchy to register a profit on the £33m paid to Lille in 2022, it also gives Sean Dyche a healthy war chest for new signings.
England international Kalvin Phillips is one of the players mooted as an Onana replacement [Give Me Sport, 19 July], and fans will hope the majority of that £50m fee goes straight back into the transfer kitty this summer.
In other Everton news, Sean Dyche has spoken out after the club’s latest boardroom developments took a turn for the worse.
