Euro clubs to open transfer talks for exit-linked Rangers ace ahead of January - report

Rangers are exploring avenues to cash in on Cyriel Dessers in January, according to TEAMtalk.

The news outlet reported online [17 December] that interest remains in the 30-year-old, with the Gers mooted to be keen to get rid of Dessers after what the forward did against Celtic on Sunday [15 December].

Top-flight teams in Italy and France, including AS Saint-Étienne [via Le Républicain Sportif, 14 December] are ready to open talks over a potential January deal for Dessers.

However, the Gers are unlikely to recoup the £4million they spent on the striker, although they are still keen to offload him as they look to sign a centre-back.

Rangers striker Cyriel Dessers to quit Ibrox in January?

Dessers is the Gers’ top scorer this season with 12 goals. Therefore, at the surface level, it seems absolutely baffling that the Glasgow-based club would be keen to offload him in January.

However, the Belgian-born forward has slipped down the ranks in recent weeks, with Philippe Clement starting to get the best out of Hamza Igamane, who has five goals in his last six games, which has allowed for Danilo’s return to the first-team picture.

And it feels as though he might have put the nail in his own coffin against the Hoops at Hampden Park last time out. With the Scottish League Cup final having finished 3-3, the match went to penalties.

However, Clement’s side were beaten 5-4, with Dessers refusing to take a spot kick, despite leading the scoring charts at Ibrox this season.

As a result, fans won’t be best pleased with Dessers after what could be one of his final acts as a Rangers player.

In other Rangers news, Chris Sutton expects the club to pay an “absolute fortune” for one player already at Ibrox.
