Everton in talks to sign new striker, may need to sell one player first - report

Everton may need to sell Dominic Calvert-Lewin to fund a transfer move for Chelsea striker Armando Broja, according to The Athletic.

The report on 11 June states that “a host of clubs” are competing for Broja’s signature, with Everton already in dialogue to try to get it done.

However, Chelsea are thought to be keen to wait until after the forward’s involvement with Albania at the Euros before agreeing a sale.

Should Everton replace Dominic Calvert-Lewin with Armando Broja?

There is certainly an argument to be made for selling Calvert-Lewin.

The 27-year-old’s performance levels have fallen since the fine form he displayed in the 2019/20 and 2020/21 seasons, when he scored 29 Premier League goals across those two seasons.

Persistent fitness issues limited him to just 17 English top-flight outings in the subsequent two campaigns in which he scored a combined seven times in the competition – the same as his total league tally from 2023/24.

The striker has just one year left to run on his contract and an extension makes little sense for a player who has not hit double figures for three seasons now.

However, the choice to go for Broja as a replacement is a surprising one, given the Albania international has struggled with his fitness since bursting onto the Premier League scene with a successful loan spell at Southampton.

At 22, age is still on his side, but Everton would be splashing out on a relatively unproven talent – a risk they perhaps cannot afford to take, given their precarious off-field position.
