Everton-linked defender set for summer transfer, PL return mooted - report

Jake O’Brien is set to leave Lyon this summer for a bigger club amid summer transfer links with Everton, according to the Daily Mail.

The outlet reported on its website on Saturday (29 June) that the Toffees are understood to have considered a move for the Irish international this summer, alongside Premier League rivals West Ham United.

O’Brien’s is understood to be available for a fee in the region of £15million this summer [The Mirror, page 73, 23 June] with some of that fee set to head to Crystal Palace who included a sell-on clause in his move to Ligue 1.

Defensive reinforcements are unlikely to be at the top of Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell’s list heading into the summer transfer window, as their priority is expected to be strengthening the Blues going forward.

But with speculation continuing to swirl around Jarrad Branthwaite’s future as he is linked with a summer move to Manchester United, O’Brien could be the perfect replacement for the England international if he is to depart.

The Irish international may not have proven himself in the Premier League, but he has shown during his time in France that he is more than capable of performing consistently well at the top level both for his club and internationally.

In terms of experience, his current position is not dissimilar to Branthwaite’s 12 months ago. If O’Brien is able to progress in a similar manner over the next year, he could be an excellent addition to the Blues’ ranks.

Whether or not they can get a deal done this summer remains to be seen, but currently, it seems more likely than not that he will be departing Lyon before next season is up.
