Everton loanee Neal Maupay took to Instagram to troll Lyon supporters after Marseille rescued a late 3-2 win in their Ligue 1 match.
Maupay posted on his Instagram story [22 September] in the dressing room after full-time drinking a bottle of water which just happened to feature a Lyon badge on its side.
Marseille, down to 10 men after Leonardo Balerdi’s two yellow cards inside five minutes, won 3-2 thanks to Jon Rowe’s 95th-minute goal, which came just two minutes after Rayan Cherki had equalised for Lyon.
Maupay’s Instagram story didn’t include a message explicitly calling out Lyon or their fans, but did imply that he was drinking their tears from the bottle in question.
Neal Maupay’s social media activity continues after leaving Everton
Although never much of a popular figure on the pitch during his time at Goodison Park, Maupay’s frequent and often joking use of social media has built the Frenchman an increased following.
The striker’s exit to Marseille on transfer Deadline Day, an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy, brought to an end his unsuccessful spell on Merseyside, but hasn’t slowed his social media usage.
Heading to Marseille hasn’t been seen as a good decision by all in France, but Maupay’s trolling towards Lyon after a match which had drama in spades will certainly go down well with the OM fanbase.
Maupay only entered the field of play from the bench in the 79th minute, but that still left enough time for him to be booked, Marseille to score twice and equalise, and Rowe to net a last-gasp winner for OM.
While Toffees fans were more than happy to see Maupay leave the club this summer, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see several of them keeping tabs on the striker’s already-eventful life at his new club.
In other Everton news, Jason Cundy has shared what he said about the Toffees during their 1-1 draw with Leicester on Saturday.
