Everton make £23.8m bid to sign Barcelona player - report

Everton have made a £23.8million bid to sign Barcelona striker Vitor Roque as a new striker transfer is now close at Goodison Park, according to Florian Plettenberg.

The Sky Sports journalist reported via X on Tuesday (13 August) that the Catalan giants have immediately knocked back the Toffees’ opening offer, but talks are continuing between the two clubs.

Barcelona are understood to be looking for a fee between £25.6million and £29.9million to part ways with the 19-year-old forward this summer, but Sean Dyche’s side are continuing to explore a potential deal for the Brazilian.

Just when the transfer window appeared to be quieting down at Goodison Park, it has sparked straight back into life as the Toffees continue their hunt to bring a new number nine to the blue half of Merseyside.

With uncertainty around Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Beto’s futures under Dyche, a new number nine was always going to be on the agenda in the final weeks of the window, particularly after Youseff Chermiti was sidelined.

Roque hasn’t yet really proven himself in Europe, but his performances in South America with Athletico Paranaense were enough to catch the eye of one of the world’s biggest clubs in Barcelona.

The teenager has shown plenty of promise in his first season in Catalonia, even if he hasn’t been able to play regularly week in and week out and there is a feeling that he could well be a future star if he fulfils his potential.

Ultimately, Everton will have to decide if they think this is a gamble worth taking for a fee close to £30million. The Toffees’ ownership situation could still have a huge bearing on their ability to match Barcelona’s demands.

This will be one to watch closely in the coming weeks.
