Everton are now pushing to reach an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain for Carlos Soler, according to Florian Plettenberg.
The Sky Germany journalist reported on his X account [23 August] that the Blues have now accelerated their interest in the midfielder and will look to strike a deal with the Ligue 1 champions.
Everton will face a battle with Premier League rivals West Ham United for his signature as the Spaniard looks destined to play his football in England this summer.
Everton push to sign Carlos Soler
Sean Dyche wants to use the remaining seven days of the transfer window to leave his squad in the best possible shape for the season and Soler would be a marquee addition.
While James Garner sits on the sidelines through injury, 34-year-old Idrissa Gueye and the inexperienced Tim Iroegbunam started the 3-0 loss to Brighton & Hove Albion as the centre-midfield pairing.
With a trip to Tottenham on Saturday [24 August] next on the agenda, the pair are likely to start again but it is a far from ideal midfield pairing for the long-term.
The Toffees’ plans to find a midfielder with Premier League experience have fallen flat as reported target Kalvin Phillips secured a move to Ipswich Town resulting in the side casting a wider net in their search with AS Roma midfielder Edoardo Bove also on the shortlist [Gianluca Di Marzio].
That move has cooled down since the initial reports and rightfully so, Everton now has the chance to add a fully-fledged Spanish international with Champions League experience to their side.
The deal would need to suit the Blues however, Kevin Thelwell will need to work hard to strike a deal and beat the high-spending West Ham who, at this stage, are arguably the more attractive destination.
A deal for Soler would send a statement to the Premier League that Everton are not here to make up the numbers this season but to challenge for a spot in the top half of the table.
