Everton offered Dominic Calvert-Lewin to Newcastle amid a flurry of supposed “PSR loophole” deals in the Premier League, The Times report.

According to Martin Ziegler via the paper’s website on 24 June the league is monitoring transfers to ensure clubs are acting in “good faith” after the Toffees, Aston Villa and Chelsea were involved in deals likely to help relieve profit and sustainability pressure on each, with any inflated fees constituting possible rule breaches.

Everton bought Tim Iroegbunam from Villa Park for £9million and then sold Lewis Dobbin in the opposite direction for £10m, while Chelsea and Villa have been in talks over separate transfers of Ian Maatsen and Omari Kellyman respectively.

In that context the Toffees are said to have initiated the Calvert-Lewin deal with the Magpies amid interest in Yankuba Minteh despite reservations at St. James’ Park over his injury record.

Sky Sports reported on 24 June that Newcastle had backed out of the deal.

Newcastle back out of potential Everton deals

With Everton having entered into talks with Calvert-Lewin over extending the contract which has run down to one year [BBC Sport, 30 May] and Newcastle having a long-held interest in the 27-year-old the assumption might have been that transfer discussions were generated in the North East.

If it is the Toffees who are putting their top striker on the table for negotiations then it would suggest they aren’t particularly hopeful of him signing a new deal.

That would also likely explain why they are close to signing former Sheffield United forward Iliman Ndiaye from Marseille [Foot Mercato, 24 June] and why they have been in talks with Chelsea about Armando Broja [Ben Jacobs, 9 June].

The prospect of being charged by the Premier League will not be a welcome one for Evertonians after a season where the club was twice deducted points over spending breaches.

But since the issue at hand is the value of the transfers rather than the fact clubs are seemingly doing corresponding deals than the manner of them it would seem highly unlikely that the Iroegbunam and Dobbin deals were an issue.

Everton wanted Yankuba Minteh who excelled on loan at Feyenoord last season.

As young players who count as domestic members of the squad, have some Premier League experience already and the potential to improve still their respective fees look quite moderate.

Everton are said to want close to £40m to sell Calvert-Lewin though [Sky Sports, 24 June], which based on his short remaining contract and recent injury record might be more wishful thinking.

In other Everton news, Dan Friedkin is expected to have a plan to overcome an admitted takeover-related issue.
