Everton have sided with Newcastle United and Chelsea to back Manchester City in their case against the Premier League, according to Christian Smith.

The Citizens have launched a legal battle against the organisation and their commercial rules suggesting that they aren’t fair.

The rules are regarding clubs signing sponsorship deals with companies their owners are linked to and making sure these deals are not inflated artificially.

Smith, who is a litigation editor and podcast host at The Lawyer magazine, has reported (5 June) that this battle with the Premier League has split the teams with Everton backing City against the rules.

Matt Lowton of The Times has taken to X to suggest that this “has sparked civil war among clubs with hearing due to start on June 10.”

Everton take Manchester City side in Premier League case

This is a strange argument all around. City have had 115 charges go against them and now they are going against the league in a legal battle.

They have been sponsored by Etihad Airways since their owners came in and they want to keep that deal going, paying whatever they want.

The Premier League and the majority of clubs have said that enough is enough and these dealings need to be regulated and kept fair.

Given the financial issues that Everton has dealt with this season, you would think that they would stay out and drift into the background.

This is not the case as they have stepped forward to back City in this debate which is tearing the Premier League apart right now.

The Toffees aren’t sponsored by a company that Farhad Moshiri has any link to so the fact they would get involved in this is confusing.

Maybe it is just a way for them to get back at the Premier League after a tough year but regardless it is unnecessary.

In other Everton news, shock has emerged after an “enormous” update on a £225million debt at the club.
