Deal for Everton star now 'impossible' as he demands 'absolutely unaffordable' terms - report

Barcelona sporting director Deco is admitting defeat in the club’s chase of Everton midfielder Amadou Onana, according to Mundo Deportivo.

On page 4 of the Spanish newspaper’s 6 June edition, Fernando Polo reports that a move for the Senegalese would command “absolutely unaffordable” terms.

Onana could be one of the players dispensed with at Goodison Park as the club risks having to sustain itself with player sales amid a lengthy takeover saga involving multiple parties.

The 22-year-old has been linked with Catalan giants Barca alongside several Premier League clubs.

Polo stated in the article: “Amadou Onana from Everton is the one Deco likes the most.

“But Barca considers [a deal] impossible because they believe that to let him leave, his club will ask for an amount that is absolutely unaffordable for Barcelona’s coffers.”

Onana could be on his way out of Everton

Despite Barcelona’s stance on Onana currently unclear and a move to the Camp Nou looking unlikely, Sean Dyche may be prepared to sell the midfielder to help balance the books and raise vital funds.

The unpredictable nature of the next move in Farhad Moshiri’s efforts to sell the club means player sales are currently the most reliable way of generating short-term revenue.

At 22 and with a good spell in blue currently behind him, Onana has attracted the attention of some of the Premier League and Europe’s leading clubs, with Arsenal in particular having been linked as the Gunners look for a succession plan for Thomas Partey.

Everton Amadou Onana
Amadou Onana may move on from Everton this summer

Everton have been publicly enquiring about players in Onana’s position which has accelerated interest in the former Lille man – and interest from a former midfield maestro in Deco will no doubt flatter.

Kalvin Phillips currently looks likelier than the recently linked Arthur Melo and Ao Tanaka to come to Goodison Park this summer, which could open the door for Onana to make a huge move in his career.

In other Everton news, the club are seeking a free transfer for a Premier League forward.
