Everton player agrees terms to quit, should be done before June 30 - report

Ben Godfrey is on the verge of leaving Everton for Serie A club Atalanta, with a deal likely to be completed by June 30, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Writing on X, the journalist said that talks have progressed well, with the Italian club putting forward a package valued at over £8million to secure his services.

Godfrey has already agreed to personal terms, with Romano adding that the defender is “keen” on the move.

Can Everton afford to lose Godfrey?

Everton face a tough call with Godfrey moving to Atalanta.

While it could be a win-win with the Italian club gaining a solid defender and Godfrey getting a shot at Champions League football, Everton have to weigh their options carefully.

Selling Godfrey could bring in crucial funds and avoid losing him on a free transfer next year, but it also means potentially losing a promising player who has shown glimpses of his talent.

With defensive stability a concern, Everton need to ensure any deal meets their financial needs while also maintaining a competitive squad.

The Toffees, however, could be reassured by the fact that they still have Jarrad Branthwaite and James Tarkowski in their ranks, although the former has been linked with a move to Manchester United [HITC].

The Branthwaite and Tarkowski partnership in defence means there could be little room for Godfrey, so it is easy to understand why he would be keen on leaving.

Nonetheless, the negotiations will be crucial as Everton look to strike a balance between short-term gains and long-term planning.

How they handle Godfrey’s potential departure could shape their defensive strategy for the upcoming season and beyond.

In other Everton news, the Toffees have been told to pursue a cut-price deal for Harry Maguire during the summer transfer window
