Everton agreement to sell player only hours away - report

Ben Godfrey is on his way out of Everton with the club set to reach an agreement with Atalanta “in the coming hours”, according to Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Sky Sports Italia journalist posted on X that the Serie A side was expecting to reach a final agreement with the Toffees imminently, setting Godfrey’s transfer to Bergamo in motion.

Atalanta have increased their previous bid to £8.65million with an initial fee of £7.62million paid for the 26-year-old centre-back.

Godfrey has made just 30 appearances combined in his last two seasons at Goodison Park and looks set to move on to pastures new in Italy after an agreement is reached with Atalanta [Fabrizio Romano, 27 June].

Ben Godfrey Everton exit looks inevitable after transfer update

Godfrey’s injury woes over the last two seasons mean he’s fallen well down the pecking order at Goodison Park, and just 15 Premier League appearances in 2023/24 is a testament to that.

His absences have coincided with the rise of players like Jarrad Branthwaite, who has exploded onto the scene this season and is now considered an unsellable asset in Sean Dyche’s side [The i, 21 June].

With the Toffees trying to fend off Manchester United’s advances to sign Branthwaite this summer, they appear much more open to selling Godfrey as a means to generate cash [Liverpool Echo, 29 May].

A sub-£9million move hardly represents good value for money when compared to the £20million paid to Norwich for Godfrey’s signature in 2020, but it’s reflective of the situation the Blues find themselves in.

Finance is at a premium and has been for much of the last year with sales for players like Branthwaite, Jordan Pickford and Dominic Calvert-Lewin mooted, but Dyche would much rather offload Godfrey to help ease their current profit and sustainability pressures [TEAMtalk, 22 June].
