Everton player to complete record-breaking transfer, medical this weekend - report

Amadou Onana is set to join Aston Villa in a club-record deal from Everton, John Percy has said.

The Telegraph reporter took to X on Wednesday (17 July) to report that the Villans have reached a £50million agreement for the Belgium midfielder with all financial terms agreed.

He added that the 22-year-old is set to have a medical with Villa this weekend after having a short break following his involvement with the Red Devils at Euro 2024.

Everton eased some of their PSR concerns with the sales of Lewis Dobbin and Ben Godfrey prior to the 30 June deadline for financial accounts.

But it was always likely there would be one high-profile departure this summer, partly to try and make sure they are in a better position in terms of PSR in the future and also to maybe look to re-invest some funds to improve Sean Dyche’s squad ahead of the new campaign.

Given the alternative was likely to sell talented young English centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite, most supporters would agree that the lesser of the evils was to cash in on Onana.

There is absolutely no doubting the fact that Onana has a huge ceiling in terms of potential but at times he has been frustratingly inconsistent for the Toffees.

A move to Villa Park means he gets his wish for Champions League football, while Everton receive a handy fee and likely can now fend off any attempts other clubs make for Branthwaite.

All in all, it’s a move that just seemingly makes sense for all parties.
