Ex-FIFA official slams Daily Mail after what they said about Everton man

Noel Egan doesn’t believe Everton boss Sean Dyche said anything disrespectful following the Toffees’ 3-0 loss to Brighton at Goodison Park (17 August).

The ex-FIFA official feels that a mountain is being made out of a molehill.

Everton were initially awarded a penalty for a foul on Dominic Calvert-Lewin before the decision was overturned by VAR, with the use of a second monitor required.

After the match Dyche expressed his frustrations, claiming (via the Daily Mail, 17 August), “I can’t work it out on the penalty.

“He (the referee) makes a decision in a perfect viewing point and lo and behold is called over to overturn it. So what is the point of a high bar then? We’ve had meetings about it.”

The Daily Mail claimed that Dyche defied a warning from Premier League chiefs with his rant, adding that he could face FA punishment.

However, Egan – speaking exclusively to Goodison News – feels that Dyche would have known that his side shouldn’t have been awarded a penalty.

“He didn’t say anything disrespectful, in my opinion,” Egan said.

“I think he was probably frustrated because upon closer scrutiny deep down in his heart he probably realised it wasn’t a penalty.

“It would’ve been a very soft penalty if it had been given. However, I saw nothing disrespectful from him.

“He has a bit of a rough voice, does that make him disrespectful? I don’t think so. I think the press are making a mountain out of a molehill because it is Dyche and Everton have had a tough start to the season.”

Everton manager Sean Dyche fumes after defeat against Brighton

It is understandable why Dyche was so angry after his side were beaten convincingly at home.

However, some of that anger would be better aimed at his players rather than VAR. Even if he does feel as though the decision was incorrect, it is clear that Everton currently have bigger problems.

And it won’t get any easier for the Toffees as they travel to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday (24 August).
