Celtic defender Cameron Carter-Vickers should face retrospective action from the SPFL for his antics in extra-time against Rangers, according to Keith Hackett.
Cyriel Dessers was booked shortly after being substituted on in the first period of extra time for a foul on Carter-Vickers.
The Gers striker made a late challenge on the Celtic defender. However, the USA international’s reaction was extremely over-the-top as he flung himself up into the air clutching at his foot.
Former Premier League referee Hackett believes it was right for Dessers to be booked but he’s accused Carter-Vickers of trying to deceive referee John Beaton into giving the Dutchman a red card.
“It was a reckless challenge and Dessers rightly received a yellow card,” Hackett told Ibrox News.
“The reaction by Carter-Vickers was exaggerated and I suspect he was attempting to deceive the referee into upgrading to a red card.
“It was not serious foul play and therefore the yellow card was correct decision.
“I would like to see the retrospective action on these attempts to deceive the referee to be reviewed post-match by a special panel.”
Rangers lost the game on penalties after drawing 3-3 in 90 minutes and extra-time.
SPFL told to punish Carter-Vickers after Rangers v Celtic incident
Beaton was right to book Dessers.
It was, as Neil Lennon described it, an “old-fashioned strikers’ tackle”.
The Dutchman came onto the pitch and wanted to make his presence known straight away but in doing so, he got himself booked.
Luckily for him, there was no other incident later on in the extra-time that led to him being booked again.
Strikers do it all the time but what there was no need for was Carter-Vickers reacting to the challenge the way he did.
It was embarrassing and you don’t want to see stuff like that happening.
Celtic fans would rightly criticise Todd Cantwell for repeatedly doing the same thing at Ibrox – every team has players who do it.
Referees need to clamp down on it and associations also need to start taking retrospective action.
In other Rangers news, it’s been revealed what a major Gers shareholder has told him about a sack decision on Clement.
