Ex-FIFA referee slams 'Appalling' moment in Tottenham loss v Nottingham Forest

Keith Hackett has slammed the “appalling” pulling of shirts in the penalty box as Tottenham defended a Nottingham Forest corner.

Spurs fell to a 1-0 loss at the City Ground on Thursday (26 December) through Anthony Elanga’s first-half goal to pile more pressure on Ange Postecoglou.

Former FIFA referee Hackett flagged a moment in the first half that he felt Craig Pawson could have dealt with better.

Speaking exclusively to Tottenham News, he said: “The wrestling inside the penalty area at a Forest corner kick was appalling.

“Referee Pawson talks to the players before signalling for the corner kick to be taken. Before the kick is taken, there is yet another clash of holding and pulling with two players finishing up on the ground.

“Referees should just signal a corner, signal for the kick to be taken and then penalise any holding offences with a penalty kick or free-kick.”

Defending from corners has been a problem for Tottenham throughout Postecoglou’s tenure and that was also the case against Forest.

Whether defending or attacking, Spurs were simply not good enough against their high-flying opponents.

That is now four defeats in six matches for the Lilywhites, who are in the bottom half of the Premier League in 11th place.

It goes without saying that is not good enough, and it may well cost Postecoglou his job if the run continues for much longer.
