Exclusive: Birmingham City hijack Huddersfield Town's deal

Birmingham City have hijacked Huddersfield Town’s deal for Alfie May and have had a bid accepted by Charlton Athletic, sources have told Football Insider.

It is understood the Blues have lodged an 11th-hour offer of £775,000 to Charlton for May, who led the League One scoring charts last season with 23 league goals.

The Addicks have accepted the offer, as they attempt to trump the bid from Huddersfield, which was originally accepted of £750,000 as Football Insider revealed [28 June].

May, who had been cleared to discuss personal terms with Huddersfield, will now hold talks with Birmingham – he has one year remaining on his contract at The Valley and Charlton are eyeing their opportunity to cash in on the demand.

The 30-year-old joined the club in 2023 from Cheltenham Town and scored 27 times in all competitions last campaign.

Birmingham City hijack Huddersfield move for May

Following Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town’s joint relegation to League One at the end of last season, both clubs have appointed new managers and are active in the transfer market to mount an immediate Championship return.

May is proven in League One following his talismanic form in 2023-24, scoring over a third of Charlton’s league goals as the club only managed a 16th-place finish.

The 30-year-old’s contract status has made it hugely likely he will leave The Valley this summer, with rival clubs wasting no time in offering significant sums.

Birmingham’s new manager Chris Davies will want proven players who could also be capable of performing at a higher level, with versatile forward May judged to fit the bill.

So far, goalkeeper Ryan Allsop is the Blues’ only summer signing.

Huddersfield, under Michael Duff, are also hunting promotion and could respond with a higher offer given their power in the transfer market, after selling Jack Rudoni to Coventry City for around £5m.

In other news, Birmingham City goalkeeper John Ruddy could move in the opposite direction to May.
