Exclusive: Club agree deal to sign young Tottenham midfielder

Tottenham midfielder Matthew Craig has agreed a loan move to Barnsley, sources have told Football Insider.

Craig, 21, impressed on loan at Doncaster Rovers last season, and multiple clubs have been chasing his signature this summer.

However, Barnsley moved quickly to agree a deal with Tottenham and Craig has already undergone his medical in South Yorkshire.

The finishing touches will now be put on the deal before it is confirmed.

Barnsley have looked to the loan market in a bid to improve their squad as they chase promotion this season, after falling in the playoffs against Bolton last time out.

Craig joined Tottenham’s academy setup aged 12 after making the switch from Watford, and made his professional debut for the club in 2023.

His current deal at Spurs is set to run until 2026 after he signed an extension in 2023.

The midfielder remains highly regarded at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and was the under-21s captain last season before his mid-season loan move.

He featured 18 times for Doncaster after joining in January, playing a key role as the club shot up the table to an eventual fifth-placed finish in League Two.

The team narrowly missed out on promotion to League One after they were defeated on penalties in the playoff semi-final.

Craig’s performances, however, were enough to attract interest from clubs across the EFL, as Football Insider revealed in April that Millwall and Sheffield Wednesday were tracking his progress.

Barnley moved quickly to get ahead of their rivals and are now set to confirm the deal.
