Exclusive: Jonathan David makes transfer decision after Newcastle mission

Newcastle United will find a January deal for Lille striker Jonathan David too hard to do, sources have told Football Insider.

The Canada international, 24, is out of contract at the end of the 2024-25 campaign.

Lille would consider cashing in on David in the January transfer window – their last chance to do so.

However, it is believed the red-hot striker has decided to run his deal down and explore his options as a free agent in the summer window.

David is aware he will be able to attract a bigger contract and signing-on fee in the off-season with no transfer fee attached.

Newcastle have sent scouts to watch him in action for Lille but will find it tough to persuade him to head to St James’ Park in the new year.

David has hit 13 goals and contributed two assists in 20 appearances across all competitions this term.

David to reject Newcastle move and leave Lille for free

The Canadian has scored four goals in the league phase of this season’s Champions League as Lille sit 14th in the table.

He scored 26 goals in 47 games across all club competitions last term and also hit two strikes at the Copa America in the off-season.

Newcastle have been searching for a new striker to provide backup to main man Alexander Isak, who has missed games through injury this term.

Callum Wilson is the current understudy but has only just returned to action after yet another injury layoff.
