Stefan Borson: Chelsea want to agree 'high-quality' deal as chief arrives from Spurs

Chelsea are looking to agree a high-quality front-of-shirt sponsorship deal after appointing Todd Kline as their new president of commercial.

That is the view of finance expert Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider it’s too late for the west London club to land a significant deal this season.

Chelsea have started the new season without a primary shirt sponsor for the second consecutive campaign after their £40million deal with Infinite Athlete expired over the summer.

Kline started work at Stamford Bridge on 11 November as he looks to improve the London giants’ commercial revenue.

He was placed on gardening leave earlier this year by Tottenham after agreeing to join Chelsea.

Chelsea chief to focus on landing shirt sponsor deal

Borson believes Kline’s focus will be around landing a lucrative shirt sponsor deal for the club.

He told Football Insider: “He’s obviously a very senior and smart commercial guy, and he will have his own relationships that Chelsea haven’t had before.

“He’s been working at Spurs, so he will obviously bring some expertise.

“But it’s not like Chelsea have had incapable commercial people. They have had good quality people there before.

“It’s not that easy to find what they want, which is a high-quality front-of-shirt partner given the problems that they have had over the past few years.

“It’s too late really for it to be a significant deal this year, so they have got an issue this year.

“We are now almost at the end of November, so the value of that deal is not going to be the £40-50million that they think it’s worth, that much is clear.

“Even if it came in tomorrow, you would think it would be worth approximately half and that’s even allowing for the Club World Cup that may or may not form part of the deal for this season.”

In other news, Man United are plotting move to sign Christopher Nkunku.
