Exclusive: Jordan Henderson's response to poss Sunderland return revealed

Jordan Henderson is open to re-joining Sunderland should a deal be agreed with Ajax, sources have told Football Insider.

This comes after Football Insider revealed that the Black Cats are working on a deal to re-sign the 34-year-old in the January transfer window.

Sources say the midfielder would welcome a return to his boyhood club despite the drop in level it would represent, as he believes he could play a crucial role in their promotion push.

Henderson left the Stadium of Light in 2011 when he made a big-money move to Liverpool and went on to make 492 appearances for the Reds.

However, he has struggled to settle since leaving Anfield, with his short spell in Saudi Arabia resulting in a move back to Europe with Ajax.

So far this season, the midfielder has made 12 appearances across all competitions and remains a regular fixture in Francesco Farioli’s side.

However, despite playing regular football for the Dutch giants, there is a feeling that a return to his boyhood club would be too tempting to turn down.

Henderson made 79 appearances after coming through the Academy of Light and is still well-thought-of amongst fans and staff on Wearside.

A possible reunion in the January transfer window has been targeted to strengthen Sunderland’s push for promotion, with the club currently sitting on top of the league after nine games.

During his time at Liverpool, the midfielder won the Champions League, Premier League, Club World Cup and four domestic trophies.

He also captained the Reds through their most successful period in recent history, and would bring a wealth of experience to the Sunderland midfield.

The average age of the Black Cats’ Championship squad under Regis Le Bris is just 22.9, and the 34-year-old has been targeted to guide this young group back to the Premier League.

Sources previously told Football Insider that Ajax would not stand in his way should the midfielder want to depart the club mid-way through the season.

It is thought Sunderland are ready to offer a short-term deal for the midfielder, with the option to extend at the end of the season, with Henderson under contract in Amsterdam until 2026.
