Exclusive: Keith Hackett reacts instantly after 'stupid' David Coote is sacked

Keith Hackett believes it was “inevitable” that the PGMOL would have to sack David Coote after his “stupid” actions got him in trouble.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former PGMOL chief, ex-FIFA, and Premier League referee emphasised that the PGMOL has a “duty of care towards Coote”.

He believes the referee chiefs demonstrated that fairness by granting the now ex-official the right to appeal after his “stupid action” led to this investigation.

Initially, Coote faced suspension following allegations about his conduct, including leaked footage of him verbally criticising Liverpool and Jürgen Klopp.

Furthermore, more controversy arose when another video showed Coote snorting a white substance during the summer Euro’s.

Additionally, there were claims that he issued a card to a fan between Leeds United and West Brom in 2019.

This sparked Leeds United fans to accuse the FA of having an agenda against their club, showing the wider issue it has caused.

In a statement on 9 December the PGMOL said: “Following the conclusion of a thorough investigation into David Coote’s conduct, his employment with PGMOL has been terminated today with immediate effect.

“David Coote’s actions were found to be in serious breach of the provisions of his employment contract, with his position deemed untenable.

“Supporting David Coote continues to be important to us and we remain committed to his welfare. David Coote has a right to appeal the decision to terminate his employment.”

David Coote actions may damage reputation of English referees

In reaction Hackett told Football Insider, “When we first saw those set of video clips it was damaging to the reputation of English referees.

“Clearly the PGMOL after their investigation are satisfied that Mr Coote is guilty of breaking his employment criteria.

“The PGMOL have emphasised that they have a continuing duty of care towards David Coote and that he has a right of appeal.

“It’s a long pathway to reach the top in refereeing with many years of dedication and a stupid action by him has resulted in the inevitable action by his employers the PGMOL.”
