Exclusive: Leicester to face points deduction after devastating blow

Leicester City could face a seven-point deduction next season after failing in their challenge against their profit and sustainability (PSR) charge, sources have told Football Insider.

Leicester were charged in March with a breach of the Premier League’s PSR rules for 2022-23, but they argued they were no longer a top-flight club when they submitted their accounts on 30 June last year following their relegation.

It has now been revealed an independent commission has dismissed the club’s claims and ruled they can be charged by the Premier League.

Leicester reported losses of £89.7million in 2022-23, with top-flight sides only permitted to lose £105million over a three-year period.

Sources say they were around £40-45million over the limit, meaning a points deduction of around six to seven points is likely to be heading to the King Power Stadium next season.

Leicester could face two points deduction next season

Leicester are gearing up for life back in the Premier League after Enzo Maresca helped mastermind an immediate return to the top flight before leaving to join Chelsea last month.

Steve Cooper has been appointed as his replacement, but the new manager is expected to face various challenges due to the club’s financial struggles.

Leicester have appealed against the independent commission’s ruling, but it is highly likely they will be hit with a points deduction if they are unsuccessful.

Sources say the club’s challenges against their charge could remove their chances of having a points deduction lowered for mitigation on early admission and cooperation.

Cooper’s former side Nottingham Forest were in line to receive a six-point deduction last season, but their early plea and cooperation saw the penalty reduced to four points.

Football Insider revealed Leicester could be hit with another points deduction later next season as they are believed to have been close to the PSR limit again for 2023-24.
