Exclusive: Man United caught up in new controversy after Government twist today

Man United are among the Premier League clubs who could face a battle over the price of matchday tickets if Labour wins the UK general election, sources have told Football Insider

It has been revealed United are considering a substantial rise in their ticket prices as Sir Jim Ratcliffe looks to drive up revenues to fund the new stadium project.

Top-flight sides have come under fire from fans after several clubs have raised their season ticket prices for next season, with Arsenal’s cheapest adult ticket rising by 10.3 per cent to £1,073.

It comes as UK citizens head to the polls today (4 July) to decide which government will be in charge for the next five years.

Sources have told Football Insider there is a good chance Labour – led by Sir Keir Starmer – will look to regulate ticket prices if it gains power from Rishi Sunak’s Conservatives.

But Premier League clubs are expected to strongly resist any attempt to cap ticket prices as they look to continue setting their own rates.

Man United price-hike plans could face government challenge

A report has revealed 70 of the 92 Premier League and EFL clubs have raised their season ticket prices for next season.

Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider the American pricing style is becoming more prevalent in football and season ticket prices are likely to undergo a consistent increase moving forward.

Man United have increased their season ticket prices for a second consecutive campaign after previously freezing them for 11 years in a row, with next season’s rates going up by 5 per cent.

Wolves were criticised after announcing a series of price increases for next season, including raising the cost of some tickets by 17 per cent and one category of under-14s tickets by 176 per cent from £105 to £290.

But the Premier League club have since scrapped the plans to increase ticket prices for under-14s and agreed to freeze the cost of adult tickets following a fan backlash.

Elsewhere, the Football Supporters’ Association has labelled Aston Villa’s matchday pricing as “simply outrageous” after it was revealed the most expensive Category A ticket will set fans back £92 at Villa Park.

But the £30 cap on away tickets for Premier League matches will continue inside all 20 grounds next season after top-flight clubs unanimously voted in 2022 to keep the limit in place until 2025.

While a potential Labour government could look to implement a cap on home tickets, Premier League clubs are expected to push back against such a motion.

In other news, Man United plan to accept “huge” offer for star man.
