Exclusive: Man United clauses revealed after £300m deal agreed

Manchester United have likely built financial incentives into their sponsorship deal with Qualcomm Technologies after the company has triggered an extension, sources have told Football Insider.

Man United agreed an initial three-year deal in September 2023 for Snapdragon, a subsidiary of Qualcomm, to become their new front-of-shirt sponsor.

The £60m-a-year deal is believed to be around a £12-15million increase annually on their previous deal with TeamViewer.

The German software company was set to be United’s front-of-shirt sponsor until 2026, but the two parties struck an agreement to terminate the deal early.

The Athletic reported on 15 August Qualcomm has now triggered its two-year extension option a year ahead of schedule after the club’s new chief executive Omar Berrada met with Snapdragon’s chief marketing officer Don McGuire in Los Angeles last month.

That will take the US company’s overall investment in the Manchester giants to around £300million over the five-year period.

Sources have told Football Insider Old Trafford chiefs have likely built clauses into the agreement that will see the club earn bonuses for any Champions League success or trophy wins to potentially mitigate missing out on more lucrative sponsorship deals further down the line.

Although Erik ten Hag’s side have won the Carabao Cup and FA Cup over the past couple of years, they are set to take part in the Europa League this season after finishing eighth in the Premier League.

Man United deal raises questions about sponsorship market

Snapdragon’s deal extension has meant United are the latest top club to sign up to a lengthy shirt sponsor agreement.

Arsenal and Emirates have been partners for the best part of the past two decades, while Liverpool and Manchester City have been sponsored by Standard Chartered and Etihad for several years.

Sources say the United deal is another indication the sponsorship market is proving difficult for top-flight sides to navigate as they look to boost their commercial revenues.

Chelsea are currently a prime example of that after they have started the new campaign without a front-of-shirt sponsor for the second consecutive season.

The London giants agreed a £40million deal with Infinite Athlete in September last year, but that agreement expired at the end of last season.

But sports business expert Lukasz Baczek reported on 22 August the Premier League club are now in talks with a Saudi Arabian airline over a potential deal.

Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider a Saudi airline would be able to pay Chelsea’s £60million-a-year asking price if the two parties can agree terms.
