Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Erik ten Hag is “almost unsackable” at Man United despite their poor start to the new season.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed the club would have to undertake a “huge overhaul” mid-season if Ten Hag is sacked, following the appointment of several backroom staff members and the purchase of multiple stars known to Ten Hag.

The United boss is facing speculation about his future once again after early-season losses against Brighton and Liverpool.

It was widely reported that Ten Hag faced an end-of-season review from club chiefs at the end of the 2023-24 campaign but kept his job after winning the FA Cup.

Since then, Rene Hake and Ruud van Nistelrooy have joined the coaching staff at United – while Jelle ten Rouwelaar has also come in as goalkeeping coach.

Man United boss Ten Hag is ‘unsackable’ due to ‘Dutch contingent’

Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui have joined ex-Ajax stars Antony and Andre Onana in reuniting with Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “There’s such a big Dutch contingent at the club, in the backroom staff and on the pitch.

“If they do pull the trigger, they’ll have a big problem.

“One of the rules I certainly had when working in football, is that we wouldn’t lose more than three staff members when a manager left.

“This would be a huge overhaul behind the scenes at Man United, and it could be the same on the pitch.

“New signings came because of Ten Hag, and they won’t be as happy under a new manager.

“Ratcliffe has got himself into a very difficult position.

“The CEO and sporting director did a briefing before the game, saying how much they were behind Ten Hag.

“If they did it after the game, it might’ve been different – because losing 3-0 at home against Liverpool isn’t acceptable.

“I think Ten Hag has got a longer leash than we might have thought. He can sleep comfortably because he’s almost unsackable.”
