Newcastle United could make around £75million from a profit and sustainability (PSR) perspective if they sell star midfielder Bruno Guimaraes for £100million before the transfer deadline, sources have told Football Insider.
Guimaraes has been the subject of interest from Manchester City and Arsenal throughout the summer window following his outstanding performances at St James’ Park since making the £40million move from Lyon in January 2022.
The Brazil international did have a £100million release clause in his contract, but that expired at the end of June after the interested parties decided not to activate it.
The Athletic reported on 13 August Man City believe Guimaraes is still keen on joining them and they could resurrect their interest in him before the 30 August transfer deadline.
But a deal is expected to be difficult to reach at this stage of the window, with Newcastle likely to demand £100million to even consider sanctioning an exit for the 26-year-old, who is under contract until 2028.
Sources have told Football Insider a fee in that region could land the north-east giants a “substantial” profit of up to £75million and set them up for the next two years in terms of PSR.
Newcastle United could resolve PSR issues with Bruno Guimaraes sale
Newcastle were close to the PSR limit last season, with Premier League clubs only permitted to make £105million of losses over a rolling three-year period.
The Tyneside club sold Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for £30million and Elliot Anderson to Nottingham Forest for £35million before the 30 June accounting deadline to help them avoid a potential points deduction.
Speaking to Sky Sports on 9 August, Eddie Howe claimed being forced to sell those young talents to keep their top stars at St James’ Park marked a big blow for his side.
The Newcastle boss insisted PSR rules are the “biggest obstacle” preventing the club from progressing forward in the Premier League.
They could face PSR issues again this season as their failure to qualify for European football means there will be no extra cash coming through the door.
A potential sale of Guimaraes could help relieve those concerns, but Football Insider revealed on 12 August Newcastle are planning for him to remain part of their squad for the new campaign.
The midfielder started in 48 of his 50 appearances last season, where he scored seven goals and laid on 10 assists for his side.
