Exclusive: O'Rourke on West Ham making poss 'kneejerk' Lopetegui sack decision

Julen Lopetegui’s job is secure at West Ham despite his underwhelming start to life at the club, sources have told Football Insider.

The Irons have picked up just four points from four Premier League games so far this term and sit 14th in the table.

West Ham are targeting a return to Europe next term under the Spaniard after finishing ninth under David Moyes last season.

Lopetegui was handed more than £120million (as per Transfermarkt) of new signings in the summer window to help him make that goal a reality.

Sources say there will be no kneejerk reaction to poor results – but there is pressure to deliver in the 2024-25 campaign.

The Spaniard can also expect the passionate London Stadium crowd to turn if he cannot inspire a turnaround, with Moyes often the subject of ire during his second spell at the club.

West Ham rescued a 1-1 draw away at Fulham on Saturday (14 September) thanks to Danny Ings’ 95th-minute strike.

The Irons have also lost against Man City and Aston Villa at the London Stadium, with the strength of the schedule also taken into account by club chiefs.

Lopetegui’s side are next in action against Chelsea on Saturday (21 September).
