Everton appear to have dodged a bullet as David Datro Fofana has entered talks to leave Chelsea in a permanent deal to join AEK Athens.

The Toffees were in the market for a striker during the latest transfer window with Dominic Calvert-Lewin consistently linked with a move away from the club.

Newcastle United showed an interest in the 27-year-old as his precarious contract situation at Goodison Park continued into a new season [GiveMeSport].

Before signing Armando Broja on loan, there was interest in Fofana as a potential replacement if the Englishman were to depart.

Now it appears that Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell have gotten away with one as the Chelsea youngster looks set to move to a new destination.

Everton to miss out on David Datro Fofana from Chelsea

The Athletic reported on 9 September that “talks have stepped up” between the Blues and AEK Athens with the hope that a deal can be struck before the window shuts in Greece on Wednesday (11 September).

This comes just over a week after the Toffees weighed up bringing the ex-Burnley loanee in on Deadline Day [TEAMtalk].

A deal was considered regardless of Calvert-Lewin’s future at the club, in similar circumstances to the deal for Broja.

Any move for Fofana may not have gone down too well with the Goodison faithful given his lack of Premier League experience.

Given that Dyche already has Yousef Chermiti and Beto available, another forward who has struggled for goals in the English top flight seems unnecessary.

Now the 21-year-old looks set to make a move to Greece with AEK, which shows the level that the striker is at right now.

It is safe to say that missing out on his signing could prove to be a bullet dodged for the Toffees.

In other Everton news, the national media has raved over a ‘remarkable’ moment from one international ace.
