John Wenham has hailed on-loan Tottenham defender Ashley Phillips for working his way back into the Stoke City team.
The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose is hopeful that the 19-year-old could still finish in the PFA Championship Team of the Year.
Phillips struggled initially upon his move to the bet365 Stadium on loan. However, he has established himself as a first-team regular as of late, recently sending a message to Ange Postecoglou.
And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – wants to see this progress continue.
“He’s now back in the Stoke side as a regular,” Wenham said.
“That was a really important first step. From this point forward, it is just about continuous game time for Phillips. I really wanted this loan to be one where he finishes with 40 appearances and perhaps even gets himself into the PFA Championship Team of the Year.
“Then we would address the situation and look to line up a Premier League loan for him. However, for now, it’s just about him continuing to perform and getting into the Stoke team every week.”
Ashley Phillips making an impression on loan from Tottenham with Stoke City
After joining Stoke City on loan Phillips started just one of the club’s following nine Championship matches.
However, after going almost two months without making a league appearance, the centre-back has started the club’s past four Championship matches, with the Potters losing just once in that time.
Therefore, it is clear to see why Wenham has been impressed by the youngster’s turnaround, with Postecoglou likely to have taken notice too.
And if he continues to perform and feature regularly, there is no reason why Phillips can’t move to a Premier League club on loan next season, as has been speculated.
In other Tottenham news, Richard Keys has suggested the club are never going to win another trophy.
