Todd Boehly has been given some “free advice” to sell his share of Chelsea and buy 100% of Everton, by a finance expert.
Stefan Borson wrote on X (9 September), following a Bloomberg report on 6 September that the American’s relationship with fellow owners Behdad Eghbali and Clearlake Capital has soured, that he might as well exit Stamford Bridge and take over from Farhad Moshiri at Goodison Park instead.
The Toffees majority shareholder is currently in negotiations with another American, part Crystal Palace owner John Textor, over a sale of the club [The Athletic, 15 August].
But Borson wrote: “If Boehley et al really believe they didn’t massively overpay for Chelsea, they’d be far better off selling the 30% and immediately buying the whole of Everton. Free advice.”
John Textor engaged in Everton takeover talks with Farhad Moshiri
Borson’s assessment was likely tongue-in-cheek but the prospect of full ownership at Everton over being in joint-charge elsewhere is clearly something that has attracted Textor.
Boehly and Eghbali reportedly now have differing views on how Chelsea should be run, while Textor has been frustrated in being outvoted by his co-owners at Palace [The Athletic, 22 August].
It is clearly very unlikely that Boehly would turn suddenly his attentions to the Toffees, but it is potentially something that couldn’t be entirely ruled out since Clearlake are said to be ready to buy him out.
Textor has settled on Everton, and is now confident of striking a deal with Moshiri within a month [Guardian, 10 September], but he is not the only party to have been looking to buy in at Goodison while showing interest elsewhere.
MSP Sports Capital are another group to have entered into exclusivity with Moshiri in recent seasons, but they were thought to be looking at Tottenham at the same time [Sky Sports News].
If Boehly did decide to depart Chelsea and sell his share to his co-owners and now rivals it would give him a head-start on Textor, who still needs to get rid of his Palace holding.
He reportedly now has offers [Sky News, 26 August] but the sale has proven difficult for him over a sustained period [The Esk, 31 May].
In other Everton news, a manager has taken advantage of sack pressure on Dyche to put his name back in the frame for the Toffees job.
