Exclusive: Tottenham plotting to recall 21-yr-old from loan

Tottenham are considering recalling Matthew Craig from his loan at Barnsley in January and sending him elsewhere, sources have told Football Insider.

Craig is wanted by multiple EFL clubs as the start of the winter window approaches.

The 21-year-old joined Barnsley on a season-long loan deal in the summer after enjoying an impressive loan spell at Doncaster Rovers last season.

Several clubs are monitoring Craig’s situation and Tottenham could recall the midfielder early from his loan at Oakwell and loan him somewhere else to ensure he is getting regular first-team action.

The Scotland Under-21 international has made 15 appearances in all competitions for Barnsley so far this season, but in recent weeks he has found himself on the bench for the Tykes.

He has been an unused substitute in each of the Yorkshire sides’ last five League One games as they have slipped outside of the playoff places in the third tier.

Tottenham could cancel Craig’s Barnsley spell in January

Craig had previously failed to appear in only one of the club’s first 15 league games of this season.

The London-born star spent the second half of last season on loan in League Two with Doncaster Rovers, making 20 appearances and notching one goal and two assists.

He primarily featured as a defensive midfielder but can also star in a more advanced midfield role.

Craig is under contract at Tottenham until June 2026.

Barnsley sit eighth in League One while Ange Postecoglou’s side are 11th in the Premier League after a recent slump in form.
