Expert View: £100k-a-wk Tottenham player is 'Miserable', Spurs could sanction free transfer

John Wenham believes Tottenham would consider allowing Giovani Lo Celso to leave the club for free.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose feels that the North London side must do whatever it takes to ensure the midfielder leaves the club before Friday (30 August).

Lo Celso is yet to feature for Tottenham during the 2024/25 campaign.

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – feels that a permanent solution needs to be found.

“I could see Tottenham allowing him to leave for free,” Wenham said.

“Just so that they’re not paying him over £100,000-per-week to sit in the stands, be miserable, and not contribute.

“Since the start of the window, he has been one of the players who I’ve always thought must go. I do still think he will leave before the transfer window shuts.”

Tottenham to allow Giovani Lo Celso to leave the club for free?

There hasn’t been much concrete interest in Lo Celso. That will come as a concern for Daniel Levy and Tottenham, who need to find a solution sooner rather than later.

Lo Celso’s contract with the club expires next summer. Therefore, if the Argentinian doesn’t leave before the transfer window shuts, he is likely to leave for free this time next year.

That would be a disaster for Spurs as they would be paying the midfielder more than £100,000-per-week for another year, even though he isn’t part of Ange Postecoglou’s first-team plans.

As a result, if no bids arrive in the coming days, Tottenham might have to bite the bullet and let Lo Celso leave for free this week, rather than wait a year, pay him big money, and then lose him for free.
