Noel Egan agrees with the decision not to award Manchester United a penalty for a Cristian Romero handball as Tottenham won 3-0 at Old Trafford on Sunday (29 September).
The ex-FIFA official believes it would have been “extremely harsh” on the centre-back if a spot kick was given.
It comes after the ball appeared to strike Romero’s arm inside the penalty area during the second half at Old Trafford. However, former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher doesn’t think it was enough to warrant a penalty (via Sky Sports News’ Ref Watch, 11:08 am, 30 September).
And Egan – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – is an agreement.
“I’m not convinced that was a penalty at all,” Egan said.
“Where the players were positioned and how his arms were positioned as the ball came across, that was definitely not a penalty for me.
“They took a look at it on VAR and they then disregarded it. Therefore, I think they made the correct call on that occasion. It would have been extremely harsh.”
Tottenham record a convincing victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford
This perhaps feels like the biggest win of Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs reign. Therefore, while not every player was at their best at Old Trafford, confidence will no doubt be sky-high within the group.
Had United been awarded a penalty, it would have been extremely soft. In addition, it wouldn’t have been deserved considering the way the two teams played.
Even if the hosts had been given a penalty and scored, Spurs would have likely still gone to win. That is how good the North London side played, with ex-Spurs scout Bryan King wowed by one “outstanding” player.
As a result, Postecoglou will feel as though his side have finally turned a corner after a slow start to the season.
In other Tottenham news, a 21-year-old at the club has been speculated to join a Premier League side on loan next season.
