Ferguson: John Gilligan will be 'Delighted' with imminent Rangers development

Barry Ferguson believes John Gilligan will be delighted to have his first game as Rangers caretaker chairman as the return to Ibrox.

The 72-year-old has stepped in after John Bennett stepped down from his role due to health reasons [Rangers.co.uk].

Writing for the Daily Record‘s print edition on 19 September (page 47), Ferguson thinks the temporary chief will be happy that his first game in charge represents a return to Ibrox against Dundee.

He said: “It’s taken such a toll on John Bennett the chairman has had to stand down to concentrate on his own health.

“John Gilligan has stepped in as caretaker and he’ll be delighted his first home game coincides with the big reopening of Ibrox.”

The Light Blues supporters were rapidly running out of patience with Bennett after his spell in charge of the club.

The Ibrox redevelopment debacle, which has seen Gers play home matches at Hampden Park so far this season, was just one of a number of issues, with poor recruitment and a failure to have a sustainable transfer model noted as issues among the fanbase.

Things on the pitch have not been great either, with the Gers failing to reach the Champions League proper and losing the first Old Firm derby of the season in humbling fashion, which has seen the pressure grow on Philippe Clement.

The Belgian is looking to keep on the winning trail after the Gers rebounded from the humiliating defeat against Celtic at Parkhead just over two weeks ago by defeating Dundee United 1-0 last time out.

There is hope that returning to Ibrox could prove to be a boost for the Light Blues players and supporters moving deeper into the season.

Fans will also be hoping that Gilligan can do a positive job in the interim after taking over from Bennett.
