Barry Ferguson believes Jack Butland, John Souttar and Connor Barron have the potential to be the next Rangers captains with James Tavernier in and out of the team.
The 33-year-old right-back, who was handed the armband in 2018, is starting to lose his place in the starting lineup in recent weeks after a dip in form.
With Tavernier on the bench, Butland has led the team onto the pitch, and Ferguson made his feelings clear about the situation regarding the captaincy at the Light Blues.
“Clement isn’t disrespecting the armband by handing it around to anyone who fancies having a go. On the contrary, he has selected Jack Butland as the man to step up if or when Tavernier isn’t in the team,” he wrote in the Daily Record [15 November].
“And Butland has the personality and the intensity required to fill that mantle. I look at John Souttar as another who could fill the role if required. Maybe young Connor Barron could be a future Rangers captain if he continues to grow into the jersey.”
James Tavernier Rangers exit inevitable
Tavernier has spent nearly a decade at Rangers and has been a loyal servant to the team, winning the Scottish Premiership in 2021 and the League Cup in the previous campaign.
Undoubtedly, the Englishman has been an important figure for the Light Blues over the years, but his displays this season have been concerning.
The Ibrox faithful recognise the threat the right-back provides going forward, but his defensive frailties can’t be pushed under the rug.
Dujon Sterling started over the club captain in the 1-1 draw against Olympiacos in the Europa League on 7 November, and the 25-year-old proved that he’s more than capable of taking the mantle from Tavernier.
Clement also has Neraysho Kasanwirjo at his disposal and the Dutchman has impressed in the few minutes he’s been handed in the current campaign.
Butland has been one of the Light Blues’ best players over the last few months, and it’s unsurprising to see the England international being handed the captain’s armband.
Tavernier is coming towards the end of his career, and it would only be prudent of the club to find a replacement for him sooner rather than later.
In other Rangers news, Keith Jackson believes the armband has been degraded at the club after what has happened.
